A mysterious cassette with a marker tag that only says \u201cARTIST?\u201d So I put the tape on my walkman just to listen this message that maybe will be helpful for you. Here is the transcription:<\/p>\n<p>Stop trying to be successful<br>\ntrying to be the best<br>\nRepeat after me\u2026<br>\nI\u2019m not gonna make it as an artist<br>\nDo you notice the relief after saying these words?<br>\nBecause I do.<br>\nWhen you are making art in any form\u2026 music, visuals\u2026 whatever\u2026<br>\nthe most pernicious feeling you can have is:<br>\nI need to be successful<br>\nI need to have a career making this or that<br>\nit doesn\u2019t matter how good you are at your game<br>\nSuccess is most of the time about being lucky and having some amount of talent, of course.<br>\nThat\u2019s the truth.<br>\nSo relax\u2026<br>\nYou must do your stuff because it is part of who you are.<br>\nNo other reason is valid.<br>\nYes, I know\u2026 you have to buy stuff.<br>\nJust keep your job or look for something that leaves you enough time<br>\nto make the stuff you want to make.<br>\nAnd I\u2019m not giving you this advice because I have<br>\na punchline where I reveal the secret to be successful.<br>\nOn the contrary, I\u2019m giving you this advice because\u2026<br>\nI have a master\u2019s degree in making unsuccessful things.<br>\nI have a lot of experience being an unsuccessful artist, musician, writer.<br>\nSo I am feeling entitled to say\u2026<br>\nDon\u2019t punish yourself.<br>\nThe goal of making all these artistic things isn\u2019t to have a job, but to have a soul.<br>\nBut don\u2019t get me wrong, your time making these things is valuable,<br>\njust like the time of anyone in their daily jobs, right?
